I had the amazing opportunity to serve as the Student Sound Designer on Rowan University Department Theatre and Dance’s production of The Tempest, which ran at the Tohill Theater on Nov. 1-3, 2024. I worked under David Cimetta, the lead Sound Designer for the project. This was an independent study assignment that allowed me to immerse myself in the world of Prospero, Caliban, and many more Shakespeare characters that I now recognize as some of the most well-written characters in theatrical history. The play took place on a magical island that truly took shape with soundscapes and other textures that the characters and story interacted with in a special way. The directors, Paule Turner and Ross Beschler, told us that they wanted the island to seem magical, but not in a fairytale way. They wanted the island to resemble a living, breathing creature; something that held culture and life, something that was constantly changing and evolving. Therefore, they wanted the storm in the beginning to act similarly in comparison: it was something that was alive with breath and spirit. It wasn’t just rain. It allowed me to develop my stylistic eye as a designer and explore abstract concepts.
