The Ways of White Folks, a theatrical adaptation of the famous Langston Hughes' novel, was my first Rowan University production. Our biggest challenge with the sound for this production was adapting to the promenade-style staging, which split the performance into nine different rooms, each with different acoustic aspects and treatments. It was my responsibility to brainstorm nonconventional and cost-effective, but still efficient, PA placements and acoustic treatments for each performance space. Some spaces required a PA system. Other spaces required nothing but simple acoustic treament; old-school curtains to rid the room of reflections to enhance vocal clarity.
